The change in volume of concrete due to loss of moisture at different stages due to different reasons is known as shrinkage of concrete. It depends on W/C ratio, temperature, humidity etc.
Shrinkage can be reduced by using
(1) Low water cement ratio.
(2) Saturating aggregates
(3) Designing the concrete mix properly
(4) Tight and non-absorbent formworks.
(5) Reducing the height of fall of concrete during placing operations.
The following steps should be taken to overcome BLEEDING’.
(a) The mix should be designed properly and carefully.
(b) Richer concrete should be used and W/C ratio should be kept constant
(c) Fine sand should be used.
(d) The air entraining agents should be used.
