Reciprocating compressor :
The reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting.
The pulsating action of reciprocating compressor limits the rate at which fluid can be delivered.
It is used for low mass rate and for higher pressure.
It may be air cooled or water cooled.
Rotary compressor:
In rotary compressor, mass flow is continuous.
It is used for higher mass flow rate and lower pressure ratio.
The different rotary compressors used in practice are:
(1)Vane type compressor.
(2) Roots blowers.
(3) Centrifugal compressor.
Rotary compressors are compact, light in weight and runs at higher speed.
